Japanese whaling begun around the 12th century. During the 20th century Japan was heavily involved in commercial whaling. The real purpose of hunt whales was to use for scientific research by the Institute of Cetacean Research. The problem started when hunters or fisheries companies commercialized the whale meat.
The International Court of Justice discovered that JARPA II (the name of Japanese whaling program in the southern ocean) was not used whales for scientific purposes and ICJ revoked all permit or license to kill, take or treat whales on March, 2014.
Anti whaling government and groups have strongly opposed Japan's whaling program. Whales are in danger and must be protected. Japanese government give support to protect the endangered  species.
Anti whaling organizations, civil groups and campaigners claim that not at all Japanese people  support the government policy about whaling, the result was that many companies decided to end their sales of whale meat.

WHEN THE EMPEROR WAS DIVINE

When emperor was divine is a excellent novel. I had mixed feeling when I was reading because the story about a Japanese American family was devastated when their father was taken away by conspiracy. My heart broke a hundred times in a short hours when I was reading. The narrative life in a barracks was the sad moment to me because this family was interned in a internment camp for only one  reason that they were Japanese and therefore American's thought  was  that Japanese people were their enemies.

I recommend this book for the quality of the writing. This book invite to examine  what the democracy, patriotism, justice or freedom mean.
